How to create a journal to help those suffering from dementia recall precious moments and participate in celebrations.
There are currently 30 million people with dementia worldwide and it is estimated that by 2050 the number of cases will have risen to100 million according Alzheimers Disease International. Memory loss is one symptom of the disease, which can be very distressing and frustrating for the sufferer and his family. Most people can claim to have forgotten something important at some time in their lives but for those who suffer from dementia, forgetfulness is a regular occurrence. What is a Memory Book?A memory book is a collection of information presented in different mediums to help represent specific times or milestones. They are similar to a ‘newborn’ book where events and time are recorded for future reference. A memory book can help someone with dementia celebrate wedding anniversaries, significant birthdays or just a special holiday. The development of a memory book is something in which all the family, young and old can participate and contribute something personal to a loved one, who may have difficulty remembering their names at times. Photographs and ImagesImages are very powerful, particularly photographs of particular events and celebrations. Those who suffer from dementia, often can recall in detail, times from very long ago as if it were yesterday. Once they are provided with a visual prompt without being urged to just ‘remember’, their recollection of the event can be quite detailed. For example for a special wedding anniversary, include photos taken before the ceremony and at regular intervals since then. These could include, special birthday celebrations, birth of children, family holidays. Snapshots and formal photographs can be collected from the whole extended family. Written Memories and AccountsFamily and friends can help to jolt memories of those struggling to remember special times. Written accounts of a humorous event, poems, dedications by children and grandchildren all help to trigger recall. These are not only of benefit to those who suffer from dementia but also for their partners, who may have forgotten certain elements. Young children can become involved by producing paintings and drawings to be included. Family and friends develop a sense of participating in the celebrations at the same time as supporting a loved one in feeling stressed and excluded. World Wide Significant EventsWith the advent of the internet, information about what was happening in the world years ago is readily available. A memory book could include snippets of this information, which complements the significant events detailed. For example including images of the number one music single, the film nominated for an Oscar that year, the fashion trends or new inventions. The list is endless and could be geared to match the interests of the individual. Developing a memory book can take time, so if it is being developed for a significant event, a little organisation is required. The end result is a lasting record of the celebration or significant event, which has been contributed to, by family and friends. It is something, which does not put pressure on the individual to remember without prompts and allows them to celebrate special times at their own pace and with their loved ones.
